I have really enjoyed this module and hope that others continue to do so in the future. I have learnt so much to do not only with communities but the internet as a whole, it has also opened my eyes to a number of different subject areas that i would never have even thought of, i.e. community persuasion.

Well for this module we had to actively engage with a number of communities which at the time i wasn't looking forward to but now, one particular community in particular (moneysavingexpert) i am hooked! and it has stopped being a chore and is now one of the first sites i look at when i log on the internet.

So i feel i have benefitted from the module in not only my analytical skills but also in my general regard to the internet and communities in general.

So as a result of this Blog we have had to do for the module i am now thinking of setting one up for my personal views and thoughts so i can share them with the world! So this might not be my last posting on a Blog after all!

Blogs - Comments

Well so over the time on my Blog a number of people have posted (not as many as i would of liked though!) well i just wanted to say thanks to them!

Also i have really enjoyed going onto other people in the COOL modules Blogs and posting my opinions, advice and just making my presence on the internet felt!

Cool WebCT Reflection

As the end of the module grows near i would just like to state how much i think the COOL discussion board has helped me on my completion of the portfolio tasks and this Blog. It is really helpful that we can all post to each other about or problems but also so that we can interact with each other to help with our understanding of the communities and their structure.

This also is good for the module team as they can easily convey information to us through this board and it also helps them to keep track of what we are discussing in order to make sure we are on the right track!

Now some people might say that it has helped students to complete there work and that it has made it easier for them, well i disagree. Not only does it show us how much work we have to do but it is also shows us the quality of the work, which makes us try harder

Proposed Change to Weightings - Part 2

So the module team have finally laid to rest today the whole proposed weighting issue, they posted:

"We have discussed this and cannot make formal changes to the weightings as they are in the module spec. and the module guide and there's not been any overwhelming response from you lot - possibly because you've been too busy working on your IP posters and COOL portfolios! BUT what we can do is mark the two pieces of work, calculate the final marks both on 50:50 and 60:40 weighting (as was suggested here) and moderate each individual's final mark to reflect the better mark. That way no one will be disadvantaged at all and extra effort in the portfolio will be rewarded where deserved. I hope everyone will find this satisfactory. Hope you all have a good hannukah, solstice, christmas, hogmanay, whatever. Lynette"

So in the end i feel the module team have come up with a suggestion to mark the modules work, lets hope i get a good mark!

Proposed Change to Weightings

So for the past couple of days on the COOL discussion board there has been talk over changing the weightings of the Blog compared to the portfolio. The module team had posted a comment on how would we feel if the weighting was changed from the current 50-50 to 60-40 (60 been the portfolio), well i for one posted aginst this and would be hugely dissapointed if this was to go through. I know that there was a hell of a lot of work to do for the portfolio tasks but i also feel that personally i have put a lot of work into this Blog!

Some people posted that they didnt want to change the weightings as they thought they would get more marks (because they thought the Blog was easier to get marks for), but i think it could be the other way round. From the feedback i got from when the module team reviewed my Blog i feel it is going to be much harder to get points for my Blog than the portfolio!!

Week 11 - Future Perspectives

This weeks lesson was all about the future of communites and the internet. It was really interesting to read the "history of futures" - futures means, the future, to study the future - and "futures pholosophy". I have to admit though it is a bit weird when you start to look at what is predicted to happen, for example on the "BT Technology Timeline" it states- 2010, the highest earning celebrity is synthetic, and 2075, humans assimilated into the internet.

I looked around on the internet for more information on this area and as well as the "BT Technology Timeline" i came accross the following websites:

http://www.futurestrust.org.nz/Futuresthinking.html - this website talks all about "futures thinking", just what it is and how it works.

http://www.eetimes.com/story/OEG20011026S0109 - a news story about the internet's future and also peoples behaviour.

http://www.theta.com/goodman/future.htm - states what they think the internet will be like in the future.

I have to admit that i think most of what is predicted is either very far fetched or will not happen by the time they say it will, but it still provided me with much interested while reading. But saying that i cannot say that none of these will be possible because technology is always changing and has changed so much in such a short time that I guess anything is possible.

As for communities i think that graphics and multimedia will be more used for these in the future. Communties will probably be like full worldd that you can explore and meet new people, but actually get to see what they look like at the same time! Im sure there will be much more that will be achieved but i guess until then we will just have to wait and see!

Week 10 - Communities of Persuasion

This week our lesson was all to do with the different ways persuasion can be used online, and especially in a community environment.

Before this lesson i had never even contemplated that persuasion techniques could be implemented over the internet, im not really sure why this is but i suppose it was because i like to think i am independant and that i make my own mind up about what i choose to do.

So know that i thought about all of this i decided to look at a few of my own communties that i was a part of, to try and make out whether they were indeed been persuasive or not, and if so for what purpose.

MoneySavingExpert
Well to start with this community was on the handout sheet as an example of a persuasive community. I have been a member here for quite a while and now i do agree that it can be very persuasive. One of the main things that this community does is make you want to keep checking the forums constantly for the latest bargain!
From analysing this forum i have also found out that people can use this in a very big way for their own financial gain. A lot of the time people from businesses will come into the "Quick, Grab it While You Can" board and post their latest offers, these are not necessarily cheap bargains but people will still go and visit the site and many will purchase these items as they are persuaded it is a good deal (because someone has posted it in the forum).

eBay
People who see eBay advertised and on the tv see only one side of the story, the happy buyer with their new item and the happy seller with money. Now with eBay's feedback policy where you can see the buyer/seller's previous dealings, so if someone has a good high feeback score then this persuades even more that you will be dealing in a safe and trustworthy environment and this also gives people a feeling of "reward", this gives the user something back and shows to other users that they are a good "eBayer", but this can be far from the truth!
For a start people can "fake" their eBay feedback and also the services eBay provides for sending/receiving payment can be used "unethically". For example people can order an item and pay through Paypal (eBay's online payment facility) but if they do not recieve the item and the person they sent the money to is not a "confirmed" Paypal user then you cannot claim your money back. Needless to say that sellers on eBay can send an item and once the buyer knows it has been send they retrieve their money back and the seller is left with nothing.
So while eBay promotes and persuades its users with being safe this is far from the truth!

I have done a quick search on google and listed below some relevent websites on information regarding types of persuasion and how it is used online:

http://www.informationblast.com/Persuasion_technology.html
OnlinePersuasionChapter.PDF

Yet Another Joke

A professor is giving the first year medical students their first lecture on autopsies, and decides to give them a few basics before starting.

"You must be capable of two things to do an autopsy. The first thing is that you must have no sense of fear."

At this point, the lecturer sticks his finger into the dead man's anus, pulls it out, and then licks it.

He asks all the students to do the same thing with the corpses in front of them. This means to remember that although you are using a computer you are still dealing with a real person, just via the computer. So you should express yourself in the same way as you would if you were face-to-face.

A number of behaviors can breach this principle, for example;

Take advantage of anonymity - to post/say something bad that you wouldn't have dared to do before for fear of retribution.

Be nasty/flaming - saying something to hurt someone's feelings that you wouldn't do if you were face-to-face with them.

Take an easy way out - maybe telling someone some bad news over the internet as you do not want to be there when they hear it.

Pretending to be someone else - masquerading yourself as someone else for unethical things.

Week 8 - Culture of Communities

Do communities have their own culture? Well in order to answer this we have to know what is meant by "culture of communities";

"The beliefs, ideas, traditions etc... of a group/community"

Personally i feel that on-line communities "can" have their own culture, i mean some people cannot think of a world without the internet as it is part of their daily life. Also with standards being developed and people having expectations of each other (like using "netiquette") doesn't this sound like a culture (using rules and guidelines etc..)?

But are these on-line communities "full blown" cultures or just following a number of guidelines for using the internet? well i feel that it is a mixture of both a real culture, and guidelines of use and conduct.

Week 7 - Theories of Group Formation and Behaviour

So why do we join groups or communities? what is it that we get out of them, and how does this affect our behaviour?

Well the main reasons we join communities are;

For "Gains" or to get Rewards - this is behavioral psychology, as we want to get something out of it for ourselves, but if the cost on us of getting the information (not necessarily money wise) is more than the reward we are getting from it, then we leave.

To Recapture Lost Family - This is Sigman Freud's theory that poeple join communities in order to try and recapture the family we had when we were children, i have to say i find this very interesting.

Evolutionary - This is meaning that we need to form groups and communities in order for us to survive and evolve as humans.

The discussion in the tutorial about how an online group differs from a face-to-face one was really interesting. The Tuckman life cycle for face-to-face and Kat Nagal's for an online group are really informative and help a lot in showing why certain thing happen, and what will happen next. Although the lifecycles look diferrent they are infact quite similar, one of the main differences is that the storming (conflicts as roles are contested) starts quicker in a face-to-face group than an online one, i think this is because we can assess each other much better and quicker face-to-face, also this is usually before rules are established. An online discussion usually goes through a state of norming, where people work together and accept the rules, before storming happens. Another main difference is that in a face-to-face group it usually performs its purpose and then terminates, whareas an online group might terminate before it ever completes theirs.

If i was to analyse the current state of the online communities im currently associated with using Kat Nagal's life cycle then i would say:

FriendsReunited: Growth (Forming)
MoneySavingExpert: Community (Norming)

Module Encouraging Problem Behavior?

Personally I don't think that the module is encouraging any problematic behavior like internet addiction etc... but maybe thats just me, as im sure there are some addicts on the course and yes its all of you who post at 5am! :0)

Im sure it is getting more people sucked into the groups they have had to join though, but don't know if that is necessarily a bad thing as I have saved myself £50 from using some info from one of the communities I joined!

Week 6 - Abuse On-line

On-line abuse is another point which divides many people in the internet community.

"Flaming" is the most common type of abuse, flaming is saying a nasty comment/being nasty to someone. As i said most people are divided on this issue as some people don't like flaming, in some communities it is against the rules. Whereas other people like getting things off their chests and letting people know what they think of them, and there is sometimes a seperate part of the community (maybe a new thread in a forum) which is dedicated just to flaming (http://www.vgchat.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65 is an example).

In the tutorial we looked at a case study of an online community which was split in half when an act of "on-line rape" happened. One side were saying that it was unlike any real-life abuse as the recipient could just log off and ignore the comments, but on the other side the rest were saying that their on-line identities were like real life, so the abuse felt just as real.

My personal opinion on this situation is that it is ludacris, the recipient could of just logged off or ignored the user. I feel it would be up to the moderators of the community to sort it out "IF" the abuser breaks any of their rules. But i would also like to think that people on the internet would follow some sort "Netiquette" (an online form of etiquette - no flaming etc..) so this shouldn't happen in the first place!!

But thats just my 2 cents and what do i know :0)

Week 6 - Identity

The issue of identity on the internet is a big one as the majority of the people who use it are never totally truthful.

In our tutorial lesson we looked into the study carried out by Miller and Slater, they identified that there are two different, but related, ways that people put accross their identity on the internet.

"Expansive Realisation" = This is where people show themselves as an "idealised self", what they would like other people to see them as.

"Expansive Potential" = This is an "alternate persona", people make up an identity which is different to their own, and put this accross.

I have found this to be true in my experience on the internet. I have noticed a few of my friends put accross an idealised picture of themselves, especially when talking to new people.

Week 6 - Addiction

ARE YOU AN ADDICT?

I had never thought that maybe the internet could be addictive, but my eyes are definatly more open on this subject now!

In the tutorial we went through a few case studies where people were said to have been addicted to the internet, it seems that like any addiction it can caus major problems to your health and to your relationships with others.

So i took the online internet addiction test at NetAddiction.com and scored 32/100;

"You are an average on-line user. You may surf the web a bit too long at times, but you have control over your usage."

So it seems i havn't turned into a geek just yet then! Im definatly more aware now of how much time i am spending online, and i have to admit that i do find myself saying "Just a few minutes more!".

I don't really find myself agreeing though that it is actually internet addiction, i feel that the people are addicted to what it is that they are doing at the time, be it chatting, ebaying or gaming for example. The website where i took the online addiction test NetAddiction.com seems to back me up on this idea too, as there are a number of different internet addiction subject tests that you can take part in.

Cybersexual Addiction Quiz - A quiz to determine if you are addicted to cybersex or viewing cyberporn.
Internet Addiction Test - A test for on-line users to determine if they may be addicted to the Internet.
Quiz for Obsessive Online Traders - If you think you may spend too much time trading stocks over the Internet, then take this quiz.
Quiz for Compulsive Online Gamblers - If you spend too much time at the virtual casinos, then take this quiz to see if you're hooked.
Quiz for Online Auction Addiction - Do you spend too much time at eBay or uBid? This was really interesting as it brought up a number of key points, for example; what real and virtual really means in the context of the internet and what makes them categorised that way.

It seems that the questions that were shown to help us think about defining whether they were real or virtual communities were hard to implement one way or the another, for example, who is to say when it changes from being a real to a virtual community? different people have their own personal opinions on this. In our groups we concluded that even if a community is only meeting online, it is still people connecting and forming relationships so it cannot really be classed as virtual.

It was interesting to hear different peoples views and thoughs on this, i felt the discussion went in a very healthy direction as it seemed to bring people around to the same way of thinking, which was that it's quite hard to define whether certain communities are purely virtual.

Communities Update...(Friends Reunited)

I was reading in a few places about friends reunited so i thought i would give it a try, so i am now registered with them.

Ive looked around on the site and there are a lot of people from my school year already registered so might give a few of them a message...

Friends reunited is a site where you sign in and input the details of your previous schools, universities and jobs in order to find people that were there at the same time, and so they can find you. With her pulling and him pushing, the boots still didn't want to go on. When the second boot was on, she had worked up a sweat.

She almost whimpered when the little boy said, "Teacher, they're on the wrong feet." She looked and sure enough, they were.

It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on.

She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet. He then announced, "These aren't my boots."

She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, "Why didn't you say so?" like she wanted to.

Once again she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off.

He then said, "They're my brother's boots. My Mom made me wear them."

She didn't know if she should laugh or cry.

She mustered up the grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. She said, "Now, where are your mittens?"

He said, "I stuffed them in the toes of my boots..."

Her trial starts next week.

Community - Reflective Practice

So i was on Money Saving Expert website today and thought i would say thanks to someone who had posted about where to buy cheap dvd's, well to my surprise about an hour after i had posted someone else was posting on the board and it was all derogatory remarks flaming me! Their argument was that people "like me" cluttered up these forums by posting useless thankyou messages. While i agree that sometimes too many thankyou posts can disadvantage a forum (it can increase the loading time of the page for example) in this particular situation i was the only person who had thanked him so i felt this was out of order!

Well this particular thread seemed to very quickly turn into an all out "forum war" with people posting on both sides of the fence about their feelings on the matter and in the end the moderators had to step in. They decided to move the discussion from "online discount vouchers" to the "Vent Board" (which is meant to be where people "vent their anger").

From my observation of this forum it seems to me that there is a big sense of "camaraderie" between members and they each want to get one up on the other.

Week 4 - Models of Reflective Practice

So i still haven't finished week 3's portfolio tasks and another tutorial comes by already! Its a good job the tasks this week are to continue with last weeks :)

This week we had discussions on how we should reflect on our blogs as well as on our online communities. We decided the best way was to review what we had done and experienced, but to also use conceptualization in order to convey why we had done this in order to form a basis for our conclusions.

We discussed about the "Kolb Learning Cycle", which is useful for showing us the stages that are necessary for our learning. It is a simple model but really affective in conveying each of the four stages of human learning; Experiencing, Reflection, Conceptualization, Planning.

So interesting stuff so far, i wonder what awaits us in the coming weeks...

Communities Update... OH... why did I bother.

The great minds of the course decided that the portfolio task for this week was to go through a 49 page (yes 49 page!) handout and use qualitative and quantitative analysis, not to mention we then have to do "Bales Interactive Process Analysis" !!!

grrr! >:(

From the tutorial this week I mostly learned about the different frameworks and structures to do with online communication. Early analysis of online communications was mostly quantitative data (numeric- more number oriented, for example: number of words, number of messages etc...), whereas nowadays qualitative analysis (text base, for example: asks an opinion, gives suggestion) is more the norm.

We were taught about an interesting type of analysis created by someone called Robert Bales, his way of analysing was originally for face-to-face communication, but can be applied to the online type just as usefully. He created his "Interaction Process Analysis", which is very intriguing as it assigns the communication content into three different areas; negative, neutral, and positive. Now in these three areas there are four groups that have a number of questions in them, the four groups relate to different things (positive reactions, attempted answers, questions and negative reactions) what you have to do is link the communication to one of the questions in the four groups to see what the type of communication is. The process is shown below:

Well i better get back on the grind and get on with the portfolio tasks for this week...

ClIvE

Week 2 - The Technology

Well I've just had my first tutorial of the COOL module, due to not having my timetable as stated in last weeks post, and I have to say that I think overall im going to enjoy the "COOL" module. Not least because there is no exam ;)

Today's tutorial was all about groupware, which is technology that is specifically designed to support groups of people working or communicating together. Divided into groups we discussed the different types of groupware we could think of, e.g. instant messaging, video conferencing... and how they differed from each other. I have to say I already knew of most of them, but I found it interesting the way they could all be classified when we were introduced to using the "Time-Space Matrix".

The "Time-Space Matrix" is where we had to differentiate between the different types of groupware and put them into groups, using certain conditions. The conditions were: Same Place (Co-located), Different Place (Remote), Same Time(Synchronous), and Different Time (Asynchronous). All groupware has its advantages in certain situations, but there are also disadvantages with each. I believe one of the best forms of groupware has to be E-mail as it can either be instant (if the person is at the computer at the time it is sent) or when it is sent it will be saved for viewing later (another similar example of this type of groupware is SMS messaging).

Below shows our finished analysis with some of the groupware put into the "Time-Space Matrix".

ClIvE

Joke

A joke i thought you might like, if anything it breaks up reading all the boring stuff :)

In a classroom of third graders, the teacher says to the kids, "Today, class, we will be telling stories that have a moral to them." She explained what a moral to a story was and asked for volunteers. Little Suzie raises her hand.

Suzie: " I live on a farm and we have a chicken that laid 12 eggs, we were excited to have 12 more chickens but only 6 of them hatched."

Teacher: "That's a good story, now what is the moral?"

Suzie: " Don't count your chickens before they are hatched."

Teacher: "Very good Suzie, anyone else?"

Ralphie: "Yes teacher, I was carrying some eggs I bought for my mom in my bicycle basket one day and I crashed my bike and all the eggs broke."

Teacher: "That's a nice story, what is the moral?"

Ralphie: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket."

Teacher: " Very good Ralphie, anyone else?"

Little Johnny: " Yes teacher, my Aunt Karen is in the army and when she was in the Gulf War, she parachuted down with only a gun, 20 bullets, a knife, and a six-pack of beer. On her way down, she drank the six pack. When she landed, she shot 20 Iraqis and killed ten of them with her knife."

Teacher: "Very interesting, Johnny, what is the moral to your story?"

Little Johnny: "Don't mess with Aunt Karen when she's drunk."

Well i thought it was funny! if i get sent anymore that i think are good il include them...

ClIvE

Week 1 - "COOL"

So i missed the first tutorial due to the timetable not being given out on the Friday, but instead they were given out the following Monday, needless to say i was working that day!

Anyway i spoke to a few friends regarding the lesson and looked at the information on WebCT, it seems that in the lesson we were told that a requirement was to:

"actively engage with a range of on-line communities in an appropriate, professional and constructive manner"

So ive decided to make the best of it and join some communities that i have an interest in. I have only joined a couple for the time being but im still on the lookout for any others that catch my eye.

Experts-Exchange
This is a help community that deals with computer problems (software or hardware) and it claims that more IT people have found their answers on this site than any other website in the world! Should come in very handy with my individual project problems then!!
Basically people get given 1500 points on signing up and for each question they ask they have to assign a number of points that will be given to the person who gives the accepted answer. This also encourages people to help each other out as the more points you have the more you can assign to questions, so if your in a hurry the higher points you give the quicker you are likely to receive an answer.

Ebay
Im not sure if this counts as joining a community, but i suppose it should as people can and do communicate through it. Anyway i joined as i wanted to buy a few new ps2 games, they should hopefully keep me occupied for a while so im not spending all my money in the bar!
If you dont know what ebay is then click here and go and find out... :)
...Its a place where you can buy and sell old/new items either in an auction format or for a fixed price, and yes ebay does charge you a fee for selling your items! but its not that much about 5% of the final price i think.

This blogging lark really is quite new to me and im finding it hard to put all my thought and critique down! but i suppose that at least it is adding to my key skills, i.e. communication, and helping me to learn new things so it cant be all bad! ;)

I've been looking around on the web for examples of blogs to help but there is so many! where to start... well i managed to come across one particular blog of interest eBayStrategies, this is a very informative blog all about the stuff going on at ebay and how best to promote your auctions, it also has good information on the fraudulent side of things and how to stay clear of these scammers.

All in all i think its great that people of any age, gender, ethnic background etc... can create their own blog (and for free as well)! There does not seem to much restriction on what can be discussed either as there are masses of different communities and even in different social groups (professional, social, educational, political etc...).

Well thats all for now folks but more to come... *hopefully* ;)

Introduction

Hi and welcome to my little place on the web!

I have set this up as it is a requirement for me to get a decent grade in "Communities Online" :0)

So the main aim of this blog is to report on my findings and experiences, and to also share my opinions on the different subjects and discussions raised in this module.
